Polkomtel goes live with LTE roaming service powered by the BFX Interface Gateway from BroadForward, delivered by Infradata

With the implementation of BFX, Polkomtel becomes the first Polish operator to launch a Next Generation Diameter Signaling Controller, keeping up its tradition of being a pioneer in introducing the latest technological solutions to the Polish market. The Plus LTE network covers 66.7% of Poland’s population while HSPA/HSPA+ extends to over 99.6% of its inhabitants. In 2014, Polkomtel was the first operator in Poland to test LTE Broadcast, and now it has implemented the BFX Interface Gateway to enable advanced Diameter based services starting with LTE roaming.

BroadForward BFX

BFX, nominated by the GSMA for Best Mobile Technology in 2014 and 2015, provides Polkomtel with a Next Generation routing and interworking solution for 3G, 4G/LTE, IMS, Fixed and Wi-Fi networks. BFX is a single-design software solution for DRA, DEA and multi-protocol interworking. Through its service orchestration GUI, Polkomtel can freely combine various protocol technologies with on-board functions to setup advanced service scenarios, without the need for scripting or development.

Certified reseller and signaling expert Infradata has delivered BFX to Polkomtel and configured several advanced signaling scenarios such as intelligent topology hiding as well as activating LTE Roaming by enabling a virtual MME solution to overcome HSS limitations, thus allowing Polkomtel to achieve a much faster time to market to roll-out LTE roaming.

Roman Trylski, Manager of the Network and Services Development Strategy Team of Polkomtel commented “With the launch of BFX we emphasize our ambition to remain the technology front-runner in Poland. The BFX Interface Gateway provides us with service orchestration capabilities we haven’t seen in traditional Diameter Signaling Controllers, providing us with flexibility and levels of control that are unique. With BFX we can access more of our signaling assets, allowing us to innovate faster and more cost-effective”.

Jarosław Mielcarek, President of Infradata Polska Sp. z o.o. commented “It is very rewarding to partner with a fast moving operator. Polkomtel understands how to use BFX to create a competitive advantage, using all of their signaling assets to build new services. With BFX and our help we will see Polkomtel drive innovation in LTE service and various other areas such as Fixed-Mobile convergence, Wi-Fi integration, IoT/M2M, integration of OTT and Enterprise services, VoLTE and more”

Polkomtel

Polkomtel Sp. z o.o., who provides its services under the Plus brand, is one of the biggest telecommunication operators in Poland. At present Polkomtel focuses mainly on promoting the use of mobile Internet access, including access based on the LTE technology in which Polkomtel is the leader. Since the beginning of its operations Polkomtel has pioneered implementation of state-of-the-art technical as well as telecommunication and data communication solutions on the Polish market. Thanks to such technologies as HSPA/HSPA+, CDMA, or the older generation 2G and 3G technologies, Internet access can be enjoyed by over 99% of Poland’s population, not only in major cities but also in less developed rural areas. LTE is already available to 80% of the country’s population.
