We are proud to announce that four of our partners are a Leader in the 2020 Gartner Magic Quadrant for WAN Edge Infrastructure: Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet and VMware. They are chosen from 17 vendors that Gartner evaluated for this quadrant. All vendors are evaluated on their ability to execute as well as the completeness of their vision.

Digital transformation and accelerated cloud adoption are driving WAN edge infrastructure changes for infrastructure and operations leaders responsible for networking. Consequently, I&O leaders must select SD-WAN vendors that address the evolving requirements to connect end-users to applications. According to Gartner, the strategic planning assumptions are:

  • By 2023, to deliver flexible, cost-effective scalable bandwidth, 30% of enterprise locations will have only internet WAN connectivity, compared with approximately 15% in 2020.
  • By 2024, more than 60% of software-defined, wide-area network (SD-WAN) customers will have implemented a secure access service edge (SASE) architecture, compared with about 35% in 2020.
  • By 2024, to enhance agility and support for cloud applications, 60% of enterprises will have implemented SD-WAN, compared with about 30% in 2020.
  • By 2024, 20% of SD-WAN centralized configuration and troubleshooting will be touchless via an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, compared with none in 2020.

Cisco

Cisco continues to help businesses of all sizes accelerate their journey to the cloud in a secure manner, and achieve a necessary degree of business resiliency in the age of the Next Normal.

It has one offering branded as Cisco SD-WAN powered by Viptela, which includes Viptela OS or IOS XE software with vManage orchestration. The other is Cisco SD-WAN, powered by Meraki, which includes MX appliances and software with orchestration. Cisco Umbrella can optionally be deployed for enhanced cloud security capabilities. Gartner estimates Cisco has more than 30,000 SD-WAN customers. Its operations are global, with clients across all verticals and sizes. They expect Cisco to make future investments in enhancing security capabilities, improving cloud visibility and using ML to optimize performance.

Cisco’s WAN Edge solutions enable their customers to seamlessly migrate toward a Secure Access Services Edge (“SASE”) architecture, delivering real business value for businesses during times of change and uncertainty. Digital services have shown themselves to be critical in times of distress, such as government-mandated shutdowns and environmental disasters. Their unique SASE offering is meant to help businesses of all kinds navigate these uncharted waters and is based on thirty years of continuous innovation in this space. They understand how networking and security needs are changing. Important transformations, such as moving business-critical applications to the cloud, automating factory operations, or offering consumer mobile services, must be underpinned with effective SASE architectures.

Palo Alto Networks

Palo Alto Networks CloudGenix SD-WAN is recognized as a Leader in the 2020 Gartner WAN Edge Infrastructure Magic Quadrant (MQ). In addition to this recognition, they are thrilled to share that they moved upwards on their position in the completeness of vision axis, reaffirming that their vision of offering application defined, autonomous SD-WAN, delivered from the cloud is the optimal approach for customers. They believe this is a true testament to their philosophy of increasing the pace of innovation of their acquisitions while remaining customer-focused. To add, they recently also launched the industry’s first Next-Generation SD-WAN with numerous innovations, including ML-powered autonomous capabilities; new teleworker, retail and large campus appliances; and further advancements to their powerful secure access service edge (SASE) solution, featuring deeper integration with CloudGenix SD-WAN and Prisma Access cloud-delivered security.

Palo Alto Networks acquired CloudGenix during the past year. Gartner estimates that they have more than 1,000 SD-WAN customers. It operates globally and addresses most verticals across any size. Gartner expects Palo Alto Networks to make future investments in new form factors, SD-branch, SASE, automation and enhanced visibility.

Fortinet

Fortinet Secure SD-WAN delivers a world-class user experience. Their customers can overcome WAN impairments at all edges using their comprehensive self-healing SD-WAN, achieve high performance thanks to their purpose-built ASIC and architecture, and maximize application performance with AI/ML-powered application learning. Fortinet converges networking and security into a unified SD-WAN solution with centralized orchestration, enabling customers to reduce operational complexity, and achieve the most desirable TCO. Their customers future-proof their investments by extending SD-WAN with cloud-delivered security innovations that provide flexible, secure access for a diverse and distributed workforce—anytime and anywhere. Unified orchestration capabilities further provide end-to-end visibility and control of the network environment.

Fortinet's offering is Secure SD-WAN, which includes FortiGate hardware and virtual appliances with accompanying networking and security (FortiGuard) software managed by the orchestrator in FortiManager. Gartner estimates they have 30,000 WAN edge customers and more than 8,000 SD-WAN customers. Its operations are global, and it addresses clients of all sizes in retail, healthcare, manufacturing, finance and education. Gartner expects Fortinet to make future investments in SASE, AI/ML for troubleshooting SD-branch/SD-WAN, and cloud/multicloud orchestration.

VMware

For the third year, VMware SD-WAN™ by VeloCloud® leads the WAN Edge Infrastructure market, continuing to be placed furthest in Completeness of Vision and highest in Ability to Execute.

VMware's product is branded as VMware SD-WAN powered by VeloCloud, which primarily includes SD-WAN edge (VCE) appliances, gateways (VCG) and an SD-WAN orchestrator (VCO). Gartner estimates they have more than 9,000 SD-WAN customers. Their operations are geographically diversified on a global basis, with clients across all verticals and sizes. Gartner expects VMware to make future investments in enhancing its SASE security capabilities, multicloud onramp, edge compute and AI/ML for improved analytics with the integration of Nyansa.
